We understand infertility as a sexually-paired couple’s inability to conceive after one year of sexual relations without methods of birth control. Male infertility refers to infertility in male humans.
Even though most couples are able to conceive within one year, approximately 10% of Spanish couples are unsuccessful. In the past, all efforts focused on the study and treatment of women but recent research points out that approximately 20% of couple infertility cases are due exclusively to males, and 30% to combined male / female infertility. Therefore, we can state that male infertility has a direct influence on approximately half of all couple infertility cases (female infertility accounting for the remaining 50%).
As today couples seek to conceive for the first time at a later stage of their lives, it is recommended that couples that fail to conceive after trying for 12 months undergo an initial assessment of both partners.
